A photo a day: July 30, 2012 – Saying goodbye

Today was a sad day as a bunch of us at the Boston Globe said goodbye to assignment desk/photographer/comedian/sage Ted Gartland. Ted has been with the Globe for 17 years and worked for many years at the Boston Herald before he joined the Globe. I’ve gotten to know Ted over my past year at the Globe. There were many a rough day where his friendship, puns, and jokes got me through it. And in a workplace where many of the people have known each other for decades, it can be hard to to get to know people. Ted was and still is gracious and kind to the newbies.

To say I am sad and will miss him in the newsroom doesn’t even begin to cover how I feel. Ted is a good man, a valuable mentor, and the person you want in your corner at all times.

As Ted once said about our line of work: “It’s better than putting on a mask and robbing the 7-Eleven.” Truer words were never said.

The photo a day today is his going-away cake:

What is this “a photo a day” thing about?

My goal is to post one photo a day in July, along with some info or context to the shot. Most will be from my iPhone, but some photos will be shot with my Canon DSLR.
