Canyonlands: The “other” national park near Moab

Arches National Park gets most of the love and attention from visitors who are in or near Moab. After all, it’s tough to compete with a national park who has their most famous arch on the Utah license plate! During my recent trip to Utah, I am guilty of devoting 95% of my time to Arches and leaving very little time to explore Canyonlands National Park – and I regret it!

Sunset at Canyonlands National Park
The Island in the Sky district in the northeast corner of Canyonlands National Park is an easy ~35 mile drive from Moab. On my recent multi-day trip, I was able to spend the morning and early afternoon hiking at Arches and then jump in the car to drive over to Canyonlands. We dodged a rainstorm or two on the way, but I was thankful for the puddles that allowed me to capture the dramatic shot at the top of this post.

Our Canyonlands itinerary didn’t leave any time for hiking but we did drive the scenic auto route.¬†On my next trip back, I plan to do the sunrise hike to the stunning Mesa Arch, as well as explore the other districts within Canyonlands National Park.

In the meantime, you can see my full photo set from Canyonlands National Park on Photos.Frembes.com.
