I received a “Happy birthday, Brooke!” email from the vet we used to see a few years ago. Apparently they updated their system and are sending automated emails now. Seeing them wish him happy birthday brought back that pit in my stomach and that heavy, anxious feeling of loss. We stopped seeing them when they sent our basset hound Waldo home on a high dose of prednisone and no plan. Three years ago today, I took the day off from work and drove down to NYC to adopt a scrawny, sick, old pit bull type dog. He was 13 years old and on the red list. He had a bad case of kennel cough. He had stopped eating. We didn’t know if he would last the week. His name was Brooke but we called him Grandpa. We called him Big Guy. We called him a senior derp hippo potato. He was with us for two and a half years. I fell in love with him. You fell in love with him. He passed away in November and not a day goes by that I don’t miss him. Happy birthday/gotcha day on the bridge, my Brookies. I hope that the treats are meaty, the beds are soft, and there is a spot where you can flail to your heart’s content.
